No other city has been as closely connected with the Bach family as the present capital of Thuringia. In the 17th century Erfurt's musical life was decisively influenced by numerous members of the Bach family, several of whom were Director of the Erfurt Ratskapelle (town musicians) or town pipers. 61 children from the diverse branches of the Bach family were christened in the Erfurt Kaufmannskirche (Merchants' Church) and twelve Bach weddings, among them that of Johann Sebastian's parents, took place there. Most of the Bach family lived in Erfurt and it is from there that their influence spread over the whole of central Germany. In 1716 Johann Sebastian inspected the organ in the Augustinerkirche (Church of the Augustine Priory) and is said to have paid frequent visits to relatives in the city.
