Since 1999 the Wartburg Castle has been one of the Unesco World Heritage Sites. It was here that Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia lived, Martin Luther translated the New Testament and Richard Wagner was inspired to write his opera "Tannhäuser". Martin Luther spent three of his school years in the city, a fact marked by the innovative exhibition in the Lutherhaus. In Eisenach you encounter the roots of European musical history. In the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach four members of his family worked as organists at the Georgenkirche (St. George's Church), where he was christened. Pachelbel played the organ there, and Hofkapellmeister (Court Music Director) Georg Philipp Telemann performed his sacred works in the church.
